Wednesday, September 28th, 2011Come on Tuesday October 11th from 7 pm to 8 pm to the Lee Road Phoenix Cafe for a roundtable discussion with Mary Dunbar, candidate for Cleveland Heights City Council. I have now visited every street in Cleveland Heights, knocked on thousands of doors to meet voters, and talked to hundreds. You are invited to [...]
I Support the Levy
Sunday, September 25th, 2011I have heard Superintendent of Schools Douglas Heuer speak on several occasions, and I have been impressed by the intelligence of plans to improve our schools’ performance. The latest testing results suggest that the district’s improvement programs are effective, as virtually all schools improved. The schools need our support to continue positive momentum with the [...]
Why Cracking Down is Good
Monday, August 15th, 2011The August 2011 issue of Scientific American has an article entitled “How New York Beat Crime” that discusses how in the past two decades New York achieved the largest and longest sustained drop in street crime ever experienced by a big city. It has nothing to do with solving underlying problems of income inequity, poor [...]
A Kindness
Monday, August 15th, 2011A few years before the Peace Corps assigned me to St. Joseph’s College, Sasse, in West Cameroon, Father Cunningham, a Mill Hill missionary, was made principal of the school and ordered to take back control from unruly students. Father Cunningham hired Mr. Tansinda to be Master of Discipline. The two of them figured out who [...]
Real Age
Monday, August 15th, 2011Dr. Michael Roizen, Chief Wellness Officer at the Cleveland Clinic, is one of the developers of the Real Age test on the Internet. You know your chronological age, but go to www.realage.com and take the test to find out what your “real age” is. The test tells you how well you are taking care of [...]
First Ever Triathlon
Sunday, August 14th, 2011On August 7, I completed my first ever Olympic-length triathlon. I came in #1 in my age/gender group. By finishing first in my age/gender group, I qualified on my first try for the National Triathlon competition later this month. What a surprise!
Collected Works
Wednesday, August 10th, 2011There’s so much to do in a campaign for Cleveland Heights City Council that it’s hard to find time to blog. While I’m looking for that time, click on “Read the full story” for a list a articles I’ve written over the past three years for the Heights Observer. I am now gathering new ideas [...]
Why Bicycles Matter
Monday, August 1st, 2011Let’s be honest: I have found that the Cleveland Heights Bicycle Coalition could be a full-time job, because there’s so much to do to encourage and facilitate bicycling in our city! Fortunately, lots of people embrace this cause and want to help.
Bicycle Events
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011The Cleveland Heights Bicycle Coalition, of which I am a co-founder, is an action-oriented group. Our program at 7 p.m. on July 20 on bicycle commuting at Denison Park was well attended, and many of the people present tried loading their bicycles on to an RTA bus to facilitate commuting.
Living an Active, Healthy Life
Wednesday, June 15th, 2011My vision for Cleveland Heights sees a healthy, active community. Being active can keep you healthy. The data is compelling. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that lack of exercise in the main cause of 21%-25% of breast and colon cancers, 27% of diabetes and 30% of heart disease around the world. WHO recommends 150 [...]
